about

Dylan: "this song is definitely the most meaningful on the album to me. probably being the deepest song i've ever written, and quite honestly my overall favourite. the song is a love song. it's about falling in love. where most love songs are happy, light hearted, and ultimately 'perfect'; this one is very heavy, chaotic, and haunting. to me, that's what falling in love is. everyone personifies this feeling of falling in love being easy and perfect when it mostly never really is. this song is about the mental anguish that comes with falling in love. more in detail, lyrically this song is told from two varying perspectives: two sides of the brain fighting back and forth in a battle questioning the authenticity of the emotion. [falling in love] it's a vicious and confusing fight, a musical representation of an overthinking mind. perspectives changing in the middle of a sentence. the general idea being the same, "i'm not in love[./?]". this is enforced by a lack of structure or reasoning behind every aspect of the song. instruments and noises coming in at random intervals. repetitive and dissonant drums, bass and guitar lines. no general form in lyric structure. all building up into a chaotically beautiful haunting mess, attempting to find solace in the idea that 'it's not true, if i keep repeating it, then maybe it'll make sense.' until finally everything explodes, eventually coming together into a beautiful, yet still haunting acceptance of "i'm just in love".

lyrics

i can't get her smile out of my mind
it's on it every day and night
but it's fine, it's fine, it's fine
'cause you're not in love

i think i've got it figured out
i think i know what it's about
maybe it's just made up in my mind
'cause you're not in love

you say you've got it figured out
you think you know what it's about
maybe it's just made up you mind
'cause i'm not in love

you can't get her smile out of your mind
it's on it every day and night
but it's fine, it's fine, it's fine
'cause i'm not in love (x5)

i'm just in love.
